Squamish Terminals Shoreline Cleanup

Updated: Feb 7, 2019

A few months back, Squamish Terminals was the host of the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Squamish edition. It was a beautiful sunny day, and I showed up to find a couple friends along with around 150 other volunteers gathered at the O'Siyam Pavilion in downtown Squamish. It was here that we all picked up a few garbage grabbers & nifty nabbers (yes - they're actually called that!), buckets & bags, and set out to different mapped areas of Nexen Beach, the Spit, the Squamish Terminals, and the Estuary. The mixture of sunshine and warmth on that early, crisp fall day made for a perfect afternoon to be outside, get involved, and pick up trash!

So, my two friends and I grouped up and we were assigned to a section along Spit Road and the Estuary. Off we set then, to get our hands dirty and our buckets full. While trying my best to masterfully manage pieces of garbage in one hand and my camera in the other, here are a few snaps I got of the day. And make sure you scroll all the way to the bottom for total trash numbers from the cleanup!

Enjoy.

One thing that the organizers of the Shoreline Cleanup like to do is have everyone keep track of the garbage they collect. By doing this, they're able to add to the litter counter on their website at https://www.shorelinecleanup.ca/, and people can watch the number grow over time knowing that they contributed to something larger than themselves. How great is that :)

So on this specific day between all the volunteers, we managed to fill 40 garbage & recycling bags totalling approximately 1,235lbs! Great job everyone! Looking forward to the next one.
